ACA Special Enrollment Period Texas 2026: Qualifying Events and How to Enroll
ACA Special Enrollment Period Texas 2026: Qualifying Events and How to Enroll
The ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment Period for 2026 coverage ran from November 1 through January 15, 2026. If you missed it, you're not necessarily out of options. A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) allows you to enroll in or change your ACA health insurance plan outside of Open Enrollment — but only if you experience a qualifying life event.
What Is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period is a window — typically 60 days from the date of a qualifying event — during which you can enroll in an ACA Marketplace plan, switch plans, or add dependents. Without a qualifying event, you must wait until the next Open Enrollment Period (November 1 – January 15).

How Long Do You Have to Enroll?
For most qualifying events, you have 60 days from the date of the event to enroll. For some events (like having a baby), coverage can be backdated to the date of the event.
Important: You must enroll within the 60-day window. Missing this deadline means waiting until the next Open Enrollment Period.
ACA Subsidies Available in Texas 2026
If your household income is between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), you may qualify for premium tax credits that reduce your monthly premium:
| Household Size | 100% FPL | 200% FPL | 300% FPL | 400% FPL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $15,060 | $30,120 | $45,180 | $60,240 |

2026 FPL figures. Subsidies are available up to 400% FPL in 2026 (enhanced subsidies from 2021–2025 have expired).
